‘Figura femminile’ (Female Figure)

Prior’s masterly use of lines, together with the raw ruggedness of the outer contours, lends his work a dynamic and emotional vibrancy. Further artistic articulation is achieved through the gestural painting of many of the sculptures, creating a constant interplay between the woodworking and the painting process.
Rather than painting the figures in the conventional sense, Prior performs a free, experimental application of colour on the sculptures, allowing the expansive colourful gestures to further intensify the towering, imposing and edgy nature of the figures. Bodies and physiognomies are transformed into rough landscapes, whose topographies develop their own unique characters, so that Prior’s figures seem, literally, to be scarred by life itself.

Klaus Prior’s works, biography and literature is listed in SIKART (Lexicon of Swiss Artists)
