Van Dijk often uses a completely abstract visual language in his paintings and his powerful use of color and compositions splash off the canvas.
Inspired by Italy and music, we still regularly see figurative elements in Van Dijk’s earlier work: houses, church towers, castles and colorful landscapes. His more recent work, however, is more characterized by his quest and research into the expressiveness of pure paint. Chance often plays a major role in the creation process of his works. The undercoats are created by a form of action painting and the last layer is usually applied with oil paint. With this slowly drying material, Van Dijk applies the nuances, such as the smooth color transitions and marbled effects. The titles of his works sometimes refer to lyrics that sound in his studio when he is painting.
