Ina van Toor says about her paintings: I am looking for peace. Peace, which you could compare to the silence, as can always be felt in her beloved 19th-century canal house. Her refined still lifes in oil paint and mixed techniques radiate resignation with transience but also great joy in life through the use of cheerful bright colours. Her paintings are carefully composed compositions in which she shows a special interest for small and large contrasts, such as shiny smooth objects versus dull weathered objects. For example, one sees the monumental hardstone mantelpiece of her studio topped by a subtle sprig of red berries. Despite the enormous width of the painting compared to its height, the composition scales remain balanced. Another contrast, which fascinates her again and again, is the recognisability of form, such as cylindrical vases versus the unrecognisability of, for example, a piece of wall, cut out almost abstractly, in an unexpectedly chosen perspective.
