1980-1990 Academies in Trondheim-Noorway, Emily Carr college Vancouver Canada and Gerit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam.

He spends a large part of his childhood in Tanzania. In 1980 he studies drawing in his hometown Trondheim and afterwards he studies painting and sculpture at Emily Carr College in Vancouver. After his studies in Vancouver, Hagen studies painting and sculpture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where he graduated in 1990.

During and after his studies, Espen Hagen has always been attracted to abroad. He regularly makes long hikes through North America and Mexico. During these trips, Espen makes portraits of the striking North American Indians and the indigenous Mexican population. The Indians are not only immortalized on linen, Hagen also uses hardboard. This allows him, in addition to using stencils and aerosols, to emboss the strong features of his subjects with an angle grinder. The striking and expressive style of working and the way in which Espen Hagen manages to capture the “character” of his characters through the combination of different techniques does not go unnoticed.

Many exhibitions follow, including in Vancouver, Oslo, Croatia, Massachusetts, Cologne and in Trondheim. Espen Hagen also exhibits many times in its own country.
In Amsterdam he exhibits in the Vondelpark, Galerie Donkersloot, Beurs van Berlage, Het Magazijn and Hotel Okura, but also in The Hague (Hotel Des Indes), Maastricht and Naarden (the Arsenaal).

From the mid-1990s, Espen Hagen has been working closely with his friend Herman Brood. Espen exhibits twice in Café Dante, one of which together with Brood. In 1997 they also exhibit together again, this time in the Arsenal of Jan des Bouvrie in Naarden. Due to their regular joint appearances and the many canvases they produced together, Espen Hagen is often referred to as the protégé / successor of Herman Brood.
After the death of Herman Brood on July 11, 2001, Espen Hagen painted a number of canvases in the so-called “Brood style” to deal with the heavy loss of his good friend, but now he also focuses on his well-known still lifes, animal figures and striking Indian portraits.
Espen Hagen was seen as the “coming man” in Dutch painting. Thanks to the frequent exhibitions at home and abroad and his regular television appearances, the star of this talented artist was highly traveling. On 10 April 2008, Espen Greger Hagen deceased to the effects of a cardiac arrest .
