With his dissident style, Jacques Tange [1960, Vlissingen] acquired an independent position in Dutch visual art in the first decade of the 21st century. Apparently he fits in with a pictorial tradition, but it is especially the psychological charge of his subjects that intrigues. The relationship between men and women, the power the feminine exercises over the psyche of men, the urbanized world and how to survive in it. Jacques Tange’s society often looks like an escape from reality. His birds are windable, his horses are fair horses on wheels, apartment buildings are flexible, men appear to be civilian men with bowler hats, women are inaccessible beauties. He portrays all this in colorful, imaginative and relativizing works. Tange’s paintings never intend to portray individuals, they portray a society. Jan Donia [author and art critic] uses these words in the recently published book “The garden of Eva” about Jacques Tange. His work can be found in leading galleries and collections and exhibits regularly at home and abroad.
